Who I am and what I do…
Hi! My name is Amari O’Connor (she/they), and I'm a black, queer, game designer, producer, playwright, and director who loves to use fantasy stories to create real-world, social impact.
As a writer, designer, and director, I work in fantasy-inspired realities and create accessible, digestible media to engage in conversations about complex social issues. I work as an artist so that experiences of all levels and identities can be elevated and embodied in games and onstage, whether those experiences are in a heightened reality or real-life struggles through fantasy worlds.
As a queer person of color and multi-hyphenate artist, I have always wanted to explore the world of changing the theater’s typical lens of creation. All communities flourish when they can design their own space for creative work, so my work…
As a director and producer facilitate those rehearsal rooms and audience experiences.
As a writer, I value complex themes and nuance through expansive worlds that incorporate all kinds of identities.
As a game designer, I create game worlds that allow players to have experiences outside their own, or feel seen in the art they’re engaging with.
I am committed to equity and healthy boundaries that create an environment where everyone feels safe to experiment and create. Every role in a production or on a game team is important. Similarly, every identity is crucial in making a resonant and relatable piece of media.
Collaboration, listening, gentleness, and hard work are all staples of a thriving artistic environment. Taking care of the creative space and supporting every voice, while also pulling the best out of every creator in the room is the core of my creative work and the beauty of theater/games.
